Development of the Wisdom Panel™ MX Mixed Breed Analysis test
The Wisdom Panel™ MX Mixed Breed Analysis is the result of research into the complexities of canine genetics conducted by Mars Veterinary through the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, a leader in the study of pet care, behavior, and nutritional science for more than 30 years. The unique facilities and environmental enrichment for pets at Waltham represent a philosophy of pet care and well-being that provides better and more relevant science to pets in the home environment.
Research scientists at Waltham have created a new method for determining the breeds present in the family history of a mixed breed dog. A key breakthrough made by the Waltham scientists was developing a means to detect and type multiple sites of variation across the canine genome. Over 300 DNA markers were found that assist in identifying the pure breeds present in the background of a mixed breed dog.
Mars Veterinary™ has expanded this technology to develop a library of distinct genetic signatures for breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. This unique understanding of defined breed signatures allows for the detection of traces of purebred ancestors in the animal's genetic composition.
